South Asia’s strategic position and role are becoming increasingly pivotal in shaping international relations and global power dynamics. The changing global order is transforming the region into a multidimensional geopolitical arena shaped by great-power rivalry, economic interdependence, strategic autonomy, and emerging transnational challenges. The proposed panel highlights the current challenges facing South Asia and examines how the region is witnessing major global and geopolitical shifts. South Asian countries are experiencing growing political uncertainty, regional tensions, and a degree of mistrust that is affecting relations among neighbouring states. The relationship between India and Pakistan continues to be influenced by longstanding issues such as border disputes, terrorism, and the Kashmir question. At the same time, India’s relations with other South Asian neighbours, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, are also facing various political, economic, and strategic challenges. Recent Gen Z-led protest movements in several South Asian countries have further contributed to domestic political instability, which can also influence bilateral relations and the broader geopolitical environment of the region. The growing China–US rivalry is reshaping South Asian geopolitics, as countries balance their strategic and economic interests between the two powers while seeking to maintain their autonomy. In this complex environment, India has an important responsibility to promote regional stability and constructive relations with its neighbours. Given its geographical, economic, political, and strategic position, India can play a significant role in balancing competing interests, facilitating dialogue, and addressing conflicts and disputes within the region. India’s strategic importance is not limited to South Asia; its role is increasingly significant in shaping the wider regional and global order. Therefore, strengthening cooperation, mutual trust, and peaceful conflict resolution among South Asian countries is essential for ensuring regional stability and contributing to a more balanced international system.
The panel welcomes papers that analytically examine South Asian politics through diverse regional issues, bilateral relations, and major shifts in strategic and political dynamics. It particularly encourages discussions on how India’s strategic position and evolving role influence regional power relations, cooperation, conflicts, and the broader geopolitical order.
