Artificial intelligence is reshaping the conditions under which our democracies operate, from how citizens access information and form political preferences to how institutions govern and allocate resources. This panel brings together research on the opportunities and risks that AI poses for participation, democratic elections and governance. Contributions may address the implications of AI for fair elections and the spread of false information, public trust in political actors and democratic institutions, citizen engagement and representation, and the regulatory and governance challenges that AI presents for national and subnational governments. We welcome papers using quantitative methods that advance our understanding of the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and democratic politics.
