The Indo- Pacific stands at the heart of the contemporary geopolitical transformations owing to the volatile distribution of power, vigorous strategic competition, and the unfolding of new simultaneous patterns of regional cooperation and contestation. These developments are challenging the perceptions of the regional order, while creating opposing visions of organizing security, stability and influence across the region. The prevalent erudition views the Indo- Pacific through the lens of great-power rivalry, peculiarly the strategic competition between the United States of America and China. However, the choices, strategies and initiatives of middle and smaller powers, regional organizations and other actors that are involved also design the regional order. The responses of the state to the geopolitical ambiguities are expressed in the form of strategic autonomy, coalition building, strategic alliances, economic and technological designs and the varied approaches to the regional security.
This panel endeavors to reconceptualize the evolving nature of the regional order in the Indo- Pacific by bringing together the theoretical, empirical and comparative perspectives on the forces reconstructing the region. Academic contributions that inquire strategic competition and deterrence; regional security architectures; foreign policy and strategic autonomy; the roles of India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, the ASEAN and other regional actors; incipient Mini lateral arrangements, maritime and non- traditional security; economic and technological competition; and the contesting visions of the regional order, are welcomed by the panel. It also promotes scholarship that transcends the traditional great- power frameworks and enquires the perceptions of power, strategy, security, cooperation and regional order. Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are particularly welcome.
By integrating the multiple perspectives on the Indo- Pacific, this panel aims to foster the perceptions of the reactions of the regional actors to geopolitical uncertainties and the contribution of their interactions to the appearance of novel regional configurations and remodeling of the comprehensive international order
