Trust in public institutions such as executive institutions at central and local government levels, the judiciary, and the legislative branch of government is fundamental for democratic governance. Numerous studies document both antecedents and implications of public trust on varied aspects of the society and of the functioning of the state. Key phenomena in populism, like fake news, may impose new challenges on ensuring and nurturing public trust.
This panel aims at exploring how public trust - in any public institution, is influenced by different aspects of populism, as well as on the influence of public trust on the functioning of the state. We particularly look for comparative outlook on trust trends and developments in different contexts.
