This panel brings together critical perspectives from the Global South to interrogate contemporary configurations of imperialism and their transformative impact on the global capitalist architecture. Rather than viewing imperialism as a capitalist historical artifact, this panel analyzes its contemporary iterations, characterized by dynamic forms of interventionism, legal and economic coercion, and military escalation by traditional hegemonies and supranational entities, such as the USA, Israel, EU and NATO. By focusing on recent geopolitical developments and state-level crises - notably in regions such as Palestine, Venezuela and Iran - the panel critically seeks to examine how unilateral actions, extraterritorial sanctions and hybrid interventions actively erode State sovereignty and subvert foundational principles of international law and it's system and institutions, specially the UN. Panelists will address how current geopolitical dynamics challenge established international institutions and norm-setting mechanisms, while simultaneously giving rise to emerging counter-hegemonic legal and political discourses originating from Southern geographies. Through a multidisciplinary critical framework combining political theory, international law, political economy, geopolitics and international relations, the panel offers alternative analytical tools to decipher the structural violence, economic dependencies and systemic instability generated by contemporary imperial endeavors. Thus, texts and speakers will be welcome by dealing with critical epistemological, theoretical and methodological approaches like those from marxism, decolonial or postcolonial thought, among other possibilities from the Global South. Ultimately, this panel seeks to contribute to the 5X社区2027 academic exchange by re-centering epistemologies, resistance strategies and structural analyses from the Global South within global debates on international order, sovereignty equality and justice.
