The global economy is undergoing a structural transformation as economic power increasingly intersects with geopolitics, strategic competition, and the institutional restructuring of global governance. The rising agency of emerging economies, shifting architectures of trade and investment, financial fragmentation, targeted economic sanctions, energy security imperatives, and the pursuit of strategic economic autonomy are fundamentally challenging established paradigms of international economic governance.
This panel examines the shifting distribution of global economic power and its implications for the future of the international economic order. It focuses particularly on the growing systemic influence of emerging and developing economies, including plurilateral groupings such as BRICS, and their evolving role in reshaping global economic institutions, rulemaking, and policy frameworks.
The panel welcomes theoretically informed and empirically grounded contributions examining issues including the transformation of global trade and investment, the changing architecture of multilateral and alternative economic institutions, South-South and North-South economic statecraft, de-dollarisation and the evolution of international monetary relations, energy and resource geopolitics, supply-chain resilience, financial fragmentation, and the future of multilateralism.
Particular analytical attention is given to how states navigate the tension between global economic integration and national economic security. Contributions may explore whether the existing economic architecture is successfully adapting or if a more fragmented, pluralistic system of global economic governance is taking shape.
Bridging perspectives from international political economy, comparative political economy, and global economic relations, the panel advances understanding of how contemporary shifts are reshaping international cooperation, competition, and institutional authority. Papers focusing on the Global South, Eurasia, Asia, and changing economic dynamics among major powers are especially welcome.
