Global trade routes have increasingly become arenas of geopolitical competition as geopolitical tensions, conflicts, and strategic rivalries expose vulnerabilities in existing connectivity systems. The Russia–Ukraine conflict, instability in the Middle East, intensifying strategic competition between major powers, and growing concerns over supply chain resilience have accelerated efforts by states and economic actors to diversify transportation corridors and develop alternative routes connecting Asia, Europe, and beyond.
This panel examines how geopolitical disruptions are reshaping the architecture of global trade networks and transforming transport corridors into instruments of economic security, strategic influence, and diplomatic engagement. Particular attention is given to the evolution of Eurasian connectivity, including the Northern Corridor, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor), China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and emerging links across the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
The panel explores how states respond to changing geopolitical conditions by investing in infrastructure, strengthening regional partnerships, and competing to become critical nodes within global supply chains. It also considers the role of smaller and middle powers in leveraging geographic position, connectivity projects, and economic diplomacy to increase strategic relevance.
Key questions addressed include: How do geopolitical conflicts reshape the geography of trade? Under what conditions do alternative corridors become viable substitutes rather than complementary routes? How do infrastructure investments influence regional power dynamics? What are the implications of transport diversification for China–Europe relations, Eurasian integration, and the future of globalization?
By bringing together perspectives from international relations, political economy, geography, and regional studies, this panel seeks to advance understanding of how connectivity networks are becoming central elements of contemporary geopolitical competition and global economic transformation.
