In an era of intense geopolitical uncertainty, economic protectionism, precarious transatlantic ties and major and regional power rivalry, Europe has been recalibrating its approach to the Indo-Pacific. The European Union (EU) and its member states have been more deliberate and targeted with its outreach and engagement while focusing on common denominators and shared challenges and priorities with its Indo-Pacific partners. This was evident in the launch of the EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy and EU member states launching their own strategies to engage the Indo-Pacific region. The Team Europe initiative launched in 2022 sought to bring coherence and alignment to the EU’s approach, driving its institutions and diplomatic tools towards common objectives in the Indo-Pacific. At the five-year mark of the EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy, questions arise on the progress or nature and terms of engagement in the region. How have the various strategies from EU member states, EU-driven initiatives and related optics and narratives from Europe been perceived in the Indo-Pacific? Has this reinforced the EU’s indispensability in the region or contributed to the EU’s role-building aspirations in the Indo-Pacific?
